About the Class: Appropriation is for Everybody!
This two-part class will begin with a seminar that briefly surveys the use of found object and appropriation in art from Andy Warhol to Kehinde Wiley. We will discuss the relevance of appropriation in today’s art world, and ask whether this mode of making remains successful in social and political critique.
The second section of this class will require each student to make a work of art based on found object and appropriation. We will, as a group, come up with a basic idea of the direction of the pieces we are to make, and have a critique upon completing them.
Artists discussed include Kota Ezawa, Kehinde Wiley, Takashi Murakami, Bernadette Corporation, Sherrie Levine, Dara Birnbaum, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman.
2 Sessions, 2 hours each. 12 people max.
